Jacqueline “Jackie” Monitz Phillips, age 93, of Bristol, Tenn., died of COVID-19 on Thursday, January 21, 2021. Born in Manhattan on November 6, 1927, she was the only child of Polish born Constantine Monitz and French born Marie Bardin. She and her Mother traveled by ocean liner to France each summer to visit family. These trips fostered her love of French culture and language, in which she was fluent. Jackie graduated from Mount Holyoke College and did office work in various firms before her marriage. She went to Europe to work and met her future husband when he came into a service club where she was working. In 1960, Jackie and Edgar Phillips of Sword Creek, Va. were married. He remained in the Army and she followed him as he was transferred around Europe. After his military service, they settled in North Carolina and Bristol. Jackie is survived by her lifelong friend from fourth grade, Helen Bublitz of N.J.; French friends, Francine Charmont, Alain and Andree Berger, and Christine Moser; Edgar’s siblings, Gay Perkins, Donna Hess and Dana Christian; sister-in-law, Phyllis Phillips nephews, Scotty Perkins, Calvin Hess and Ernie Perkins; and several other nieces and nephews. Per Jackie’s wishes, she will be cremated and returned to France and no formal services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to in honor of Jackie’s memory to a local charity of choice. Arrangements especially for Mrs. Phillips and her family have been made through Oakley-Cook Funeral Home & Crematory.
